12/29/1998  Rise in Power Production Because of High Precipitation Rates

According to Bayernwerk Wasserkraft Corp. the high precipitation values of the past month have been very beneficial to the annual balances of its 106 hydroelectric power plants. 8.6 billion kWh of power have been generated in total. The company also said that approximately 80% of the total water power generated in Bavaria is produced by Bayernwerk's hydroelectric power plants. Water power utilization covers roughly 15% of the power demand in Bavaria. (iwr)

09/17/1998  Pilot Study for Water Power Utilization

Yesterday, at a convention of the Environment Academy in Emmendingen, Baden Wurttemberg's Secretary for Envrionmental Affairs and Traffic, Hermann Schaufler, introduced a pilot study on potential sites for hydroelectric power plants at the Etz River (Emmendingen County) and the Echaz River (Reutlingen County).  According to the study there are 15 locations along a 43 km stretch of the Etz River which seem suitable for hydro power utilization.  There are 16 suitable locations along a 23 km stretch of the Echaz River.  Schaufler said that the study does not replace permit proceedings. Yet, it allows more accurate estimates regarding the question at what locations projects can be realized without encountering pre-programed conflicts.  The operators of the power plants have to find out for themselves if hydroelectric power plants can work economically efficiently at the 31 sites.  Schaufler further said that it is, however, clear that legal obstacles do not exist at the assigned sites.  (iwr)

08/13/1998 Modernization of Neue Muehle Kassel

In the next six months Neue Muehle (New Mill) of Staedtische Werke AG (municipal works) in Kassel shall be refurbished with an investment volume of about 4 million DM. According to Staedtische Werke AG the building is "one of the oldest still existing hydro power plants in Germany". Besides the refurbishment of the building building measures enclose the installation of two new propeller tube turbines and the restoration of one of the old turbines. The refurbishment is sensible under economical points of view "since hours of use and life of the systems are higher than the ones of other sources of energy." On account of the constant water level the river Fulda grants the availability of more than 8000 hours/year. (iwr)

07/24/1998  Oker Back into Old Riverbed

According to press releases, the large-scale project of leading a 6-km stretch of the Oker river, Lower Saxony, back into its old riverbed was initiated yesterday because of the allocation of new water utilization conditions. Reconstruction efforts at the weirs are supposed to prevent the Oker from draining, a danger that has affected some stretches of the river during arid periods. In the future a water volume of 100 l/s is supposed to be ensured by these weirs. Operators of hydroelectric power plants along this stretch of the river have to expect some loss in energy yields, as the volume of residual water will rise. (iwr)

06/22/1998 Hydro Power Projects Stopped at the Moment

According to press reports in Tyrol several bigger hydro power
plants which planning has already been brought to an end will
not be realized at the moment. TIWAG-chairman Herbert
Hoenlinger justified the building freeze with the technical and
economical developments on the sector of gas-technologies as
well as the development of the gas prices having been
misjudged. The building freeze cannot mean, on the other hand, as TIWAG sees it, to be a general renunciation to building new hydro power plants. TIWAG intends to watch the market at first for 5-10 years. During that period of time those projects concerned "could  be realized any time as soon as the situation of the market changes." (iwr)

06/17/1998  User Forum on Small-Scale Water Power Utilization

DM by issue of 638000 new pieces of stock. The capital increase
shall especially strengthen the basis for more activities on the
energy sector. Until the year 2001 more than 2/3 of all investments
will fall to the energy sector, as stated by Rolf Bierwirth, member of
the board. After the takeover of 18 water power plants of the
French Compagnie Générale des Eaux at the beginning of 1998
Harpen AG became the biggest operator of private water power
plants in France. (iwr)

05/26/1998  Water Power Production 1997 Below Last Year's
According to VDEW, the hydroelectric power plants of German power companies produced 18.5 bllion kWh of power last year.  In 1996 19.1 kWh had been produced.  Thus 1997 showed a decrease of 3.2%.  Lower precipitation values can explain this decrease.  Howevver, VDEW also said that the amount of power produced by privately operated power plants has not been taken into consideration.  (iwr)
